Capri Pants, Springtime Sipping & Whiskey for the Ladies: Tales from the Hotline

If you’ve got cocktail questions, Bob Cutler has answers (and yes, sometimes fashion advice).  On a recent Cocktails with Friends Hotline episode, a brave 34-year-old gentleman called in to ask whether he had to trade his beloved Old Fashioneds for Aperol Spritzes now that spring is upon us. Also, he’s out here rocking cutoff jeans that might be closer to Capri length.

Bob’s take? In short: keep the whiskey, lose the pants.

You don’t have to abandon spirit-forward cocktails when the daffodils start blooming. Bob suggests simply brightening them up. Try swapping that wintery maple rye Old Fashioned for something with a wheated bourbon and a splash of seasonal liqueur.  Think strawberry, apricot, or even spiced pear. Toss in some fruity bitters and drop the ABV a smidge to enjoy more sunshine and sips. Win-win.

Also ringing in on the hotline: a loyal listener asking about Birdies, Novio’s seasonal outpost at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course. Mark your calendars—Birdies reopens on May 5 with a Derby Party on May 3 to kick things off in style. Expect margaritas on draft, the return of the Good Good cocktail (watermelon, lemonade, Tito’s—need we say more?), new menu items, and plenty of clam-bake-meets-golf-course fun.

And for the women wondering about those whispered rumors—yes, they’re true. Novio’s is launching monthly whiskey meetups just for the ladies. Whether you’re sipping Scotch or diving into Japanese whiskey, these classes are relaxed, welcoming, and led by Bob, Courtney, or visiting spirits pros. Check NoviosBistro.com/events or call the bistro to reserve your seat.
